British Unicycle Convention - BUC 16

Freestyle - Rules Summary

We are using the standard IUF rules, with some minor modifications, for solo, pairs and group freestyle competitions:

Categories

You can do a routine solo, or in pairs (these categories may be judged separately if we have enough entries). Groups of 3 or more are also possible (and definately in a different category!)

Novice A category for people who are not experienced in performing and have limited skill level in their routine (under UUU level 4)

Intermediate/Expert A category for people who have competed before, or are used to performing, or have higher skill levels in their routine (over UUU level 3).

Age groups will only be formed if there are lots of entries!

Time limit

Novice - 2 minutes for solo or pairs
Intermediate/Expert - 3 minutes for all in pairs or solo. 5 minutes for group.

Judging method

You are judged on 2 broad themes, technical and presentation.

Technical - this is broken down into the following sections,

  1. Variety and Originality of Unicycling Skills - hopefully fairly self explanatory.
  2. Transitions and Mastery - Transitions are how you move from one skill to the next. Harder and more varied transitions will score more highly. Mastery is how solid you are at the skills you perform.
  3. Level of Difficulty - harder skills score more!
  4. Interpretation - do the skills work well with the costume/music/props/theme of the routine?
Presentation is judged on the following criteria
  1. Mistakes. Marks are deducted for every fall!
  2. Choreography and Style. Do you use the space/music well? Do you interpret the music well with your body form?
  3. Originality of Performance and Showmanship. New performance ideas and crowd-pleasing performances will score well.
  4. Interpretation - as for technical.

Important Notes

Fire and sharp objects (e.g. juggling knives) are prohibited.

Bring your own music on CD or mp3 player (if mp3 player with a 2.5 mm jack, you'll need an adapter to 3.5 mm). Put your name and track number on a CD if you use one.

Music playback quality may not be brilliant (although we'll do the best we can) so please choose a decent recording as the volume will not be huge.

You will need to be present in the right venue at the appointed start time!!

If you bring props or set, you will only have a few minutes to set up and dismantle. Bringing a helper and making sure you know how it goes together would be advisable.
